To find the theme of a book, think about what the "moral" of the fiction story is. What is the author's big message or the lesson the main character has learned? What is the big idea throughout the book?

Watch Sean Astin read A Bad Case of the Stripes and think about what theme the author (David Shannon) is trying to tell.

(from http://www.storylineonline.net/)

In this book, Camilla pretends not to like lima beans because she wants to fit in with her classmates. In the book, Camilla refuses to admit she likes lima beans so she ends up with "a bad case of the stripes". Her stripes only go away when she learns that she shouldn't care about what her classmates think. Instead, she should be herself and enjoy her lima beans! After she learns this lesson, her stripes finally go away. The theme of this book is ALWAYS BE YOURSELF.

Directions: Read the list of themes below. As we read books together in class, we will add them to our theme wall. When you finish reading a D.I.R.T. book, think about what the author's big message was. Choose the strongest theme in your book, and add your book information below that theme. Also explain in three sentences or less WHY that theme fits with your book.
